"This outstretched hand is not a call for dialogue, it is an electoral maneuver. And it deserves a clear answer: no, I will not participate in an alliance with the National Rally, never," he stated in a press release.
He took the opportunity to recall Toulon's recent history: "I am one of those who knew Toulon under the National Front. Between 1995 and 2001, our city went through dark years: ostracized, singled out, abandoned economically, culturally, sportingly, and in terms of its associations. (...) The people of Toulon have not forgotten this past. They will never forget it. They know that the National Front can change its name, its image, and then come knocking at the town hall's door again, but that its danger remains."
Michel Bonnus also rejects the poll held up by Laure Lavalette, according to which a majority of Republican supporters in Toulon would be in favor of an alliance with the RN: "Madame Lavalette, Republican supporters do not want an alliance with the far right, and certainly not 54% of those who live in Toulon. To say this shows a profound ignorance of our city. The polls are opposed by the memory of the people of Toulon and current events."
Although he refuses any alliance with the National Rally, Michel Bonnus does not close the door to dialogue with other actors: "If I have to reach out, it will be to those with whom I have shared years of work - the current municipal team, from the right and the center-right, with whom I have led numerous projects - but also to all people of good will, whether their political leanings are right or left, as long as they share a common foundation of principles, demands and loyalty."
An unambiguous message.
